Banner Cinemana Mare Nostrum

Cinemana Mare Nostrum

Tunis, Tunisia

The Cinemana festival was founded in 2021 at the Alliance Française de Tunis offices.

It's a festival dedicated to emerging Tunisian short films, bringing together film students, independent filmmakers, and cinema lovers to train, meet industry professionals, and showcase their own work in competition for awards.

The Alliance Française, the world's largest associative cultural network, operates around two complementary strategic missions: promoting the French language and developing cultural projects that encourage diversity, mobility, and intercultural dialogue.

In this context, the Alliance Française de Tunis launched and supported the creation of the Cinemana festival, conceived as a key platform for training, professional development, and cultural outreach.

Cinemana primarily serves young filmmakers, students, independent creators, and enthusiasts, offering them opportunities for training, visibility, and networking with audiovisual industry professionals. The festival nurtures emerging talent through specialized workshops, professional meetings, competitive screenings, and focused artistic mentorship. It provides a practical pathway for cultural and professional development, especially for young people.

In 2025, the festival evolved significantly with its transformation into Cinemana Mare Nostrum. This new direction reflects a strategy of regional expansion and greater impact, positioning the project within a shared Euro-Mediterranean space. The inclusion of Italy and Malta alongside Tunisia marks the first step toward building a sustainable Mediterranean cultural network based on the exchange of films, expertise, and audiences.

Beyond geographic expansion, Mare Nostrum embraces a strong ethical and social dimension. The festival now places ecology at the core of its programming and artistic vision, raising awareness among participants and audiences about environmental challenges facing the Mediterranean region. This focus adds significant value in terms of cultural responsibility, aligning with current priorities of both institutional and private partners.

Supporting Cinemana Mare Nostrum enables us to: strengthen employability and professional development for young creators, build a lasting Mediterranean cultural network, enhance partners' visibility through a project with strong social, educational, and environmental impact, and promote Tunisian cultural creation on the international stage.

Through its institutional foundation, educational mission, and international reach, Cinemana Mare Nostrum represents a cultural investment with lasting impact, serving youth, intercultural dialogue, and regional artistic development.

FIRST OBSTACLES TO OVERCOME

Projects that already have nominations have a much higher selection rate.

That’s why we have decided to be a “bridge festival”, helping you secure those first nominations. This way, you’ll have many more chances of being selected by other festivals.

WHAT SETS US APART FROM OTHER FESTIVALS?

We believe the relationship between festivals and artists should once again be closer. Every festival has a responsibility to use all its resources to support filmmakers on their journey. Nowadays, festivals tend to promote only the winning projects, and that is not enough. Financing a festival run requires a huge effort, and festivals should do much more to help.

This is our motto:

Clear communication: We respond to all emails, personally notify all nominees, and send a second email to winners with the full list of award recipients in each category.

Constant promotion: We promote all submitted projects weekly throughout the festival.

Custom laurels: We create personalized laurels for each winning project so you can use them on your social media.

Ultra-low fees: As a festival, we subsidize 70% of the cost of each submission, so the final fee paid by the artist is much lower than usual. This is our way of supporting you on this journey.

Networking: Connections with directors, producers, and distributors.

The 13th Annual Toyama International Film Festival will take place in June of 2026 in Toyama Prefecture. With such great success in previous years, we are excited to once again share the visions of filmmakers from all over the world with our local community in the countryside of Japan.

Submissions will be open until March 22nd, 2026.

***

The Annual Toyama International Film Festival (TIFF) began in the rural prefecture of Toyama, Japan. Started by a few English teachers in the area, we hoped to reach people not just in Japan, but around the globe.

The first TIFF took place in a small room inside of a shopping center, where about 70 people watched the 10 films we had received. The following year was a tremendous success with over 100 submissions from different countries, quite a step from our first year. The event was held in the city of Toyama at a local independently-owned venue, Bodegas-Mambo with around 80-100 guests coming to view the films. Every year since, we hope to expand even further and provide an even larger venue for participants and the movie-going community in Japan.

Today, with over 3000 submissions each year from countries around the world, TIFF has become a highly-anticipated annual event and a staple of Toyama's international community.

Note: Due to time constraints, we cannot accept films that run over 10 minutes. However, any genre of short film will be considered for exhibition.
