Independent Afro Cinema and Music — Montreal, Canada
A Canadian festival celebrating independent Afro cinema and music from Africa, the diasporas and the world. Organized in Montreal by Numiaa Inc. in February 2027, during Black History Month, the festival streams its selection on numiaa.ca.
Three in-person events will be held in Montreal, all broadcast live on numiaa.ca and on the festival's social media:
• January 16, 2027 — Official selection announcement
• February 1, 2027 — Opening ceremony
• February 27, 2027 — Closing and awards ceremony
THE COMPETITION
Filmmakers, musicians and screenwriters compete for the festival's official awards:
• The Numiaa Star — Festival Grand Prize
• The Rising Star — Breakthrough / first work
• The Montreal Star — Grand Prize for a diaspora director
• The Golden Talent — Best female and male performances
• The CanadAfrica Award — Best film about Africa by a non-African filmmaker
• The Shooting Star — Best series
• The Kankan Star — Best gag
• Jury special awards, audience awards, music awards and screenplay award
INTERNATIONAL SCREENPLAY COMPETITION
The festival is also launching an international short film screenplay competition, open to screenplays with an Afro theme or written by an African or Afro-descendant author, on any subject.
THREE WAYS TO WIN
Awards are granted by a professional jury, by the public and — a first — by peers: the filmmakers and artists of the platform vote for their favourite.

WINNERS RECEIVE
The official festival trophy, an official certificate and 3 months of featured promotion on Numiaa. The winner of The Numiaa Star becomes the platform's patron for 6 months.
AND AFTER THE FESTIVAL
If their rights holders wish, works are streamed on numiaa.ca, a Quebec-based platform dedicated to Afro-descendant cinema and music, and earn revenue for their rights holders: 40% of the common pool shared among all streamed works and 70% of individual sales. Filmmakers and artists without a distributor will receive Numiaa's support in finding one. Every in-competition submitter also receives a free one-year Numiaa subscription (launch offer).

Un festival canadien qui célèbre le cinéma et la musique afro indépendants d'Afrique, des diasporas et du monde. Organisé à Montréal par Numiaa Inc. en février 2027, pendant le Mois de l'histoire des Noirs, le festival diffuse sa sélection sur numiaa.ca.
Trois rendez-vous se tiendront en présentiel à Montréal, tous retransmis en direct sur numiaa.ca et sur les réseaux sociaux du festival :

CONCOURS INTERNATIONAL DE SCÉNARIO
Le festival lance également un concours international de scénario de court métrage, ouvert aux scénarios sur une thématique afro ou écrits par un·e auteur·rice africain·e ou afro-descendant·e, quel que soit le sujet.
TROIS FAÇONS DE GAGNER
Les prix sont décernés par un jury professionnel, par le public et, c'est une première, par les pairs : les cinéastes et les artistes de la plateforme votent pour leur coup de cœur.

LES LAURÉAT·ES REÇOIVENT
Le trophée officiel du festival, un parchemin officiel et une mise en avant de 3 mois sur Numiaa. Le·la lauréat·e de l'Étoile Numiaa devient parrain ou marraine de la plateforme pendant 6 mois.
ET APRÈS LE FESTIVAL
Si leurs ayants droit le souhaitent, les œuvres sont diffusées sur numiaa.ca, plateforme québécoise dédiée au cinéma et à la musique afro-descendants, et rapportent à leurs ayants droit : 40 % de la cagnotte commune répartie entre toutes les œuvres diffusées et 70 % des ventes à l'unité. Les cinéastes et artistes sans distributeur bénéficieront de l'accompagnement de Numiaa pour en trouver un. Chaque soumissionnaire en compétition reçoit aussi un abonnement Numiaa d'un an (offre de lancement).
